What is HIFU?

HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is a non-surgical treatment that uses focused ultrasound energy to target the deeper layers of the skin. The energy reaches the deep dermis and the supporting layer called the SMAS without harming the skin surface. The controlled heat created there stimulates the body's own collagen production.

Which areas can be treated?

It is used for laxity and sagging of the face, jawline, under-chin area, neck and décolletage.

How is it done?

  1. At the consultation, your skin and expectations are assessed and suitability is decided.
  2. The skin is cleansed, the treatment area is marked and ultrasound gel is applied.
  3. The handpiece is placed on the skin and energy is delivered in lines at different depths.
  4. The treatment takes about 30–90 minutes, depending on the area.

You may feel warmth and a prickling sensation during the treatment. Comfort measures can be taken if needed.

After the treatment

  • Most people can return to daily life immediately.
  • Redness, mild swelling and tenderness settle within a few hours to a few days.
  • Because collagen production takes time, changes appear gradually over weeks. Results vary from person to person.
  • Whether and when a repeat treatment is needed is decided by the physician.

Who may not be suitable?

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Open wounds, active infection or severe active acne in the treatment area
  • Metal implants, a pacemaker or similar electronic devices in the area
  • Marked excess skin that requires a surgical assessment

Please tell us about any medications you take and any illnesses you have had at the consultation.

Possible side effects

The most common are temporary redness, swelling, tenderness and tingling. Less often, bruising, temporary numbness or line-shaped marks on the skin may occur. If anything unexpected happens, please contact our clinic.

Frequently asked questions

Are HIFU and Ultherapy the same thing?
Both use focused ultrasound energy. Ultherapy is a system that can display the tissue layers on a screen during the treatment. Which one suits you is decided together at the consultation.

Does it hurt?
You may feel warmth and a prickling sensation during the treatment. The level of discomfort varies by person and area.

How long do the effects last?
This depends on age, skin type and lifestyle. Since the ageing process continues, your physician may recommend repeat treatments at intervals.
