What is it?

HPV (human papillomavirus) is a very common virus, and some types can cause several cancers, especially cervical cancer, as well as genital warts. The HPV vaccine aims to protect against the virus types it contains.

What to know

  • The best protection comes from vaccination before exposure to the virus, but it can also be given at older ages after a physician's assessment.
  • The number of doses and the intervals depend on the age of the person being vaccinated.
  • Women should continue regular cervical screening even after vaccination.
  • The most common side effects are pain and redness at the injection site and mild fever.

Who should not receive it?

  • People who had a serious allergic reaction to a previous dose or to the vaccine's components
  • During pregnancy (vaccination is postponed until after pregnancy)
